Disney+ Clamps Down on Password Sharing in Bid to Boost Subscribers

Disney+ is set to launch a crackdown on password sharing in an effort to increase sign-ups and revenue. The move comes after rival streaming giant Netflix reported a surge in subscribers following similar measures.

Bob Iger, Chief Executive of Walt Disney, announced the platform would begin tackling "freeloaders" in June. This initial phase will target a select few countries before a full global rollout in September.

"We've been very impressed by what Netflix has achieved with their approach," Iger said, acknowledging Netflix as the "gold standard" in streaming. "Our aim is to replicate their success in boosting subscriber numbers."

Password sharing, where users grant access to their accounts to friends or family outside their household, is a common practice despite breaching platform terms of service. Disney+ is yet to reveal the exact methods it will employ to identify and address password sharing, but it's expected to involve automated systems designed to detect logins from multiple locations.

The crackdown is part of a wider strategy for Disney+ to increase profitability. The platform boasts a vast library of popular content, including Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar titles, but significant investment in new productions has impacted finances.

While some users may be frustrated by the change, Disney+ hopes the crackdown will encourage them to sign up for their own accounts, ultimately strengthening the platform's financial standing and content creation capabilities.
